So you want to start or learn to knit? First thing you need to do is get the right tools to be able to start... better keep on reading (I'll try and keep it as concise as possible).
1. Needles
Long, straight needles in a large size are best for beginners, working with a bulkier yarn. I personally prefer wooden needles as the yarn doesn't 'stick' to the needles like it does on metal or plastic. Plus, you can get relatively cheap sets on Amazon with a wide range of needle sizes.
There are a variety of different types of needles out there, but for now we will stick to regular, straight needles for a beginner toolkit.
2. Measuring Tape
Well how else are you going to measure how long your work is? A lot of patterns will say 'until measures...' that's what this bad boy is for.
3. Stitch Counter
Again, exactly as it sounds, so that you can keep track of which row you're on. I like this kind as you can hang them on your needle ready to record that row when you've finished it.
4. Crochet Hook
Useful for a range of things, especially picking up dropped stitches which, as a beginner, you will find infinitely useful! They can also be used for weaving in ends or casting on, again I prefer a wooden hook.
5. Point Protectors
The majority of my straight needles are double pointed, so these things are great to stick on the ends so my stitches don't go sliding off in my knitting frenzy. They're also good for putting on the end of normal needles if you're in the middle of a time consuming project which you will need to put down from time to time - again, ensuring there is no heart-breaking loss of stitches.
6. Tapestry Needles
You can find these in a variety of sizes and either in metal or plastic. You'll just need to make sure you have them with an eye big enough for your yarn. They're used for weaving in ends or stitching seams together.
7. Stitch Markers
Helpful little guys who help you keep track of stitches you need to in patterns. I use them most when I'm knitting in the round using the magic loop method on circular needles (see future post) and need to keep track of the start of the round.
8. Scissors
I don't think they need much explaining, do they?
For the accessories listed above, and some extras, I purchased a kit like the one pictured below pretty cheaply online which contains everything you need as a beginner.
